Foot Clinic Success at STEF's Thailand Elephant Hospital

The Southern Thailand Elephant Foundation (STEF) continues to make impressive strides in elephant healthcare, highlighted by their recent specialist foot care clinic at their veterinary centre in Khok Kloi. During an October visit, Chair Dr. Merry Smith witnessed the successful delivery of this innovative training program, which brought together participants from multiple elephant sanctuaries and veterinary hospitals in the region.

Led by elephant care expert Lee Sambrook, the two-day clinic demonstrated remarkable results, with one elephant mastering new behaviors within minutes – a testament to the gentle training methods employed. The accompanying photographs capture several touching moments, including elephants confidently stepping onto training logs for foot care and two visiting bull elephants calmly participating in treatment while enjoying their favorite snacks of bananas and watermelon.

The veterinary centre, established in 2017, has evolved into a sophisticated facility featuring shaded treatment areas and comprehensive care facilities for its pachyderm patients. Looking ahead to 2025, STEF plans to expand their facilities with a new intensive care building, thanks to funding from Mr. and Mrs. Vernon and Shirley Hill. The charity also aims to enhance their educational outreach by creating dedicated spaces for visiting school groups and professional training.

Everyone at the Anthony V Martin Charitable Foundation is proud to support the team deliver professional veterinary care to Thailand's elephants.
