Supporting WECare's Mission to Help Sri Lanka's Street Dogs
In June, the AVM Foundation proudly donated £10,000 to WECare Worldwide, a dedicated charity providing essential care for street dogs in Sri Lanka. This contribution was aimed at creating an educational video and hiring a Community Engagement Officer to amplify the video’s reach. We are excited to share the recent updates from WECare, highlighting the incredible work they’ve accomplished in July.
#1 Sunshine & Healing
July brought much-needed sunshine, allowing WECare's hospital staff to focus fully on their patients without the usual interruptions from the rainy season. The team treated over forty animals this month, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of Sri Lanka's street dogs.
#2 Community Adoption Drives: A Success Story
Despite the hospital’s heavy workload, WECare continues to face the challenge of litters of puppies being abandoned at their doorstep. July's community adoption drive was a beacon of hope, successfully finding loving homes for several puppies. This initiative not only eases the strain on WECare's resources but also ensures these young dogs receive the care and affection they deserve.
#3 Flora’s Journey: From Despair to Delight
One particularly touching story from July is that of Flora. Initially found in a dire state with severe maggot wounds, Flora was nursed back to health by the dedicated WECare team. Despite losing an ear, Flora has made a remarkable recovery and now enjoys a playful and affectionate life at the hospital. Her transformation is a testament to the life-changing impact of WECare's work.
#4 International Adoptions: A New Beginning
In August, several animals, including long-term resident Margarita, will be flown to their forever homes in the UK. These adoptions highlight the global support for WECare and the promising futures awaiting these animals.

The challenges for WECare remain significant, with their hospital continually stretched to its limits. However, with ongoing support from donors and volunteers, they persist in their mission to provide urgent medical care and find homes for street dogs.
